Lighting Refresh with Ferguson Showrooms

When we first moved into our apartment, I was deeeeeep in the midst of treatment and even though there were lots of projects on my wishlist, it wasn’t a huge priority for me. And to be honest, I just didn’t have the energy. We’ve been here for 2 years now (HOW!?!), and I’m just now getting around to some of the projects on my miles long to-do list. I personally really need to live in a space before I can even start to think about what I need, so whenever I get impatient, I try and remember that slow and steady wins the race :)

One thing that REALLY needed updating was the lighting. It was dated and I knew some updates would have a huge impact. Ferguson Showrooms reached out about partnering and I was thrilled; they have an amazing selection of options and I could see things in person, which really helps when making these types of decisions. The showroom experience was great; their staff is so knowledgeable and I knew from the beginning that I was in really good hands.

Clients are matched with an Ferguson Showroom associate who can help with measurements (not my strong suit) and make the ordering process simple. Plus, the turnaround time on my selections were super quick, which meant I could get what I wanted and FAST.

The existing light fixture in our laundry room was basic and forgettable.

The existing light fixture in our laundry room was basic and forgettable.

The two places I wanted to focus on were our roof deck and laundry room. The laundry room is a PROJECT and needs a lot of love to get it camera ready (ha!), but I also knew that a new light fixture would be a quick and easy place to start. Here’s the existing fixture when we moved in…yeesh. Not good. I wanted something timeless with an aged brass finish that would make the room feel a bit more elevated. Ferguson Showroom’s Park Harbor line had the exact fixture I had in mind for this space…

The Javins Flushmount had that beautifully soft aged brass finish I was searching for (the patina on this is so good in person!) and an unexpected shape that added a little personality to an otherwise boring space. There’s still a lot of work to be done in this room, but this small tweak has already made SUCH a big difference and makes me excited for what’s coming next in this room.

Next up; our roof deck. Having ANY type of outdoor space in the city is an absolute dream. I’ve lived in cities my entire adult life and this is the first time I’ve ever had access to private outdoor space. It is such a luxury, one I do not take for granted and certainly not during a pandemic with a young child! Anyway, it looked like this when we moved in (YIKES!) and though the space itself was great, there was work to be done.

The patchwork paint job was a huge problem, so first things first, we needed to paint. We decided to go for a deep charcoal with hints of navy, which set the stage for us to update the outdoor lighting. What we started with was industrial and too harsh to actually use. I wanted something that would blend seamlessly with the new paint job and feel modern with traditional roots (our apartment was built in 1912). I feel like outdoor lighting can be such an afterthought, but it really is just an extension of the interior of the home and I wanted something that felt considered. The Park Harbor line had soooo many outdoor lighting options; it was hard to choose!

I ended up choosing the Pimmit wall sconce. I loved that the gooseneck shape was classic and it reminded me of barn lighting on farms where I grew up in Upstate New York. The oil rubbed bronze finish created a nice tone on tone effect with the new exterior color and the hardware added a nice modern element.

I also love how it uses an exposed filament bulb; just another way to add a little unexpected twist. It feels so elevated and miles away from where we started!

I’m so happy with how these two updates turned out. Even though they may not seem like dramatic changes, simple fixes like new lighting can go a long way in transforming a space. More importantly, Ferguson Showroom was so lovely to work with and their selection was really impressive. I am by no means a designer and have lots to learn, so having a professional I could bounce ideas off of was huge for me. Lots more updates to come and if I can get my act together, I’ll try and share more here :)
