Southampton, New York
City life can be hectic, which is why places like Southampton are so special. Just a few hours from the city, but a world away is a quaint village with so not-so quaint mansions, stunning beaches and a lot of peace and quiet. If you're looking for a party, look elsewhere (Montauk). If you're looking to relax and unwind, you've come to the right place.
WHERE TO STAY
Renting a house (try AirBnb) is preferred, but otherwise The Southampton Inn has a great in-town location with walking distance to shops and restaurants.
The 1708 House is a historic homed turned B & B boasting an excellent Main Street location and cheerful details like a wood-burning fireplace in the parlor during cooler months.
The Capri Hotel has been recently refreshed, though it's location on highway 27 isn't exactly idyllic. Still, it's a great jumping off point for exploring the area.
For a bit of luxe, The Topping Rose House in nearby Bridgehampton pulls no punches.
WHERE TO EAT
Tate's Bake Shop is a Hampton's favorite. The classic, crispy cookies are a bit of a staple at our house (I'm looking at you Ginger Zinger). Ice cream sandwiches are available during the summer.
The Golden Pear is a go-to for sandwiches.
Citarella is a high-end market if you need to stock up on essentials for a rental house, but they also do great takeaway sushi and sandwiches.
The Sant Ambroeus outpost of this New York City based restaurant offers up the same Italian classics. Visit the espresso bar for a strong coffee, or grab some gelato from the front shop.
Silver's Restaurant is a lunchtime classic with old-school favorites like Lobster Salad.
Little Red delivers consistent, tasty food at a reasonable price point. Ask for a table on the patio and enjoy Ham & Cheese sliders with housemade chips. Check out their sister restaurant, Red Bar, for dinner.
The Village Gourmet Cheese Shop has an excellent cheese counter and coffee bar; perfect place to load up on staples for a beach picnic.
Tutto il Giorno for high-end, but rustic Italian and a possible celebrity sighting. Tip: Reserve a table in the charming courtyard.
WHAT TO DO
In the Fall, visit a nearby farm for apple and pumpkin picking. The Milk Pail is a local favorite. Tip: Don't leave without a few apple cider donuts.
For a dose of culture, check out the Parrish Art Museum. The building itself is beautiful. Or, make it a beach day. Cooper's Beach charges for parking, but doesn't require a beach permit like most local beaches.
Main Street and Jobs Lane are a mecca for shop-a-holics with many luxury brands and smaller boutiques. The department store Hildreth's is a landmark for everything under the sun from luxe linens to children's clothes. Colette Consignment is a great stop for second hand treasures (think Chanel and Hermes).
